The major production centers for leather products in India are located in the states of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala.

  1. Jajmau – Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh

Jajmau is a district of Kanpur also known as Jajesmow. Being the most prominent center for the leather production in India, it is also the home to some of the largest leather tanneries in the Northern part of India. Kanpur’s leather and tannery industry contributes to around about Rs 6,000 crore worth of foreign exchange and provides direct livelihood to more than one lakh people.

Kanpur’s once-booming leather economy began to shrink and was pushed to the edge by the falling global demand, environmental regulations and contemporary cow politics.

  1. Unnao – Uttar Pradesh

Tanning is one the most significant sector in Unnao, located approximately 18 km from Kanpur & 60 km from Lucknow city. This city is famous for it vast leather industry.

  1. Chennai- Tamil Nadu

Chennai is the prime cultural, economic and educational center in south India. About  50% of India’s total leather exports come from Chennai. The Central Leather Research Institute is also present here.

  1. Ambur – Tamil Nadu

Home to a significant part of India’s leather tanning industry. This town has also obtained its nickname as the Leather City of South India.  India’s most extraordinary and finest tanneries are located here, which makes it one of the leading exporters of leather goods in India.

  1. Agra – Uttar Pradesh

Agra city is quite popular for its leather goods in the country. The Leather products of Agra is hugely favored all across the world for its craftsmanship. A total of 40% of the population is mostly dependent on agriculture, while a whooping 60% harps on the leather business.

  1. Ranipet – Tamil Nadu

Ranipet, a district in Tamil Nadu houses nearly 400 small and medium leather units. A large number of medium-scale leather industries makes large quantities of finished leather products for export.

  1. Kolkata – West Bengal

The second most crucial tanning center in India, Kolkata is a major commercial, educational and cultural center of Eastern India. An abode of around 500 tanneries which contributes to about 25% of the total country’s tanning. It also provides about 55% of the entire country’s export contribution as well.

As per research, “Many international brands have begun procuring leather products from Kolkata. At least nine global majors are now procuring leather accessories from Kolkata”

The Kolkata Leather Complex is an industrial complex at Bantala in East Kolkata. It is located 14 km from the central business district of Kolkata and has an area of about 4.5 square kilometers.Since its inception in the early 1990’s this complex serves as the center of leather-tanning hub of Kolkata. In 2009, about 200 tanneries were relocated to the Calcutta Leather Complex.

The presence of finished leather and leather garments exports is moderate in West Bengal. About 5% of the country’s finished leather exports and 4% of the country’s leather garments exports originate from West Bengal.
